Richard’s Reflections
Identity Theft – Nothing To Laugh At
Most of you have probably seen
the commercials that have been on TV lately
concerning Identity Theft. Whoopi Goldberg even devoted a sitcom show to her being
a victim of Identity Theft. Both the commercials and the sitcom
used humor to talk about this subject, but please believe, it is
no laughing matter. Identity theft is the fastest-growing crime
in the U.S., costing its victims over $475 million a year. Most
people don’t realize they have been victimized until months
later. Identity theft or fraud occurs when someone uses your
personal information without your permission to open new
accounts, make withdrawals, or make illegal purchases. This can
severely damage your credit rating and reputation.
After September 11, 2001,
legislation was passed to help prevent fraud. Evidence shows
that credit card and debit card fraud is a major source of
funding for terrorists. Financial institutions are now required
to more carefully verify the identity of our account owners,
loan applicants, and individuals who purchase investment
products. This may be accomplished through government-issued
documents, such as a driver’s license or U.S. taxpayer ID
number, that verifies your nationality or residence. By
providing the required forms of identification, you can help us
meet the requirements and better protect you against identity
theft.
There are several things you can do
to prevent your becoming a victim of identity theft. Please
visit any of The Rawlins National Bank’s five branches and ask
for a brochure entitled “Identity Fraud”. This brochure is full
of helpful information concerning identity theft. If you
discover you are a victim of fraud, this brochure tells you step
by step what to do. It even has important phone numbers and
addresses that will be helpful when you ask the question, “who
should I call”?
Any information that you provide to
The Rawlins National Bank is safeguarded according to our
Privacy Policy and information-sharing practices. You can be
confident that your personal information remains secure with us
as we work toward preventing all forms of fraud.

THEN...

Take yourself back to the 1890's, to a time when Rawlins and
Carbon County were young, robust and expanding. Newspaper and
promotional accounts a century ago proclaimed Rawlins as "the
distributing point for a vast outlying country extending 100-150
miles in various directions, and the amount of merchandise that
leaves this city daily is surprisingly enormous. The area sheep
industry has made hundreds wealthy.
"Population in 1898 is about 2,800 and business men of this
city and locality are wide awake to the possibility of its
becoming the metropolis of Wyoming." The future "metropolis of
Wyoming" needed sound financial institutions. Businessmen who
organized The Rawlins State Bank -- a year later to become The
Rawlins National Bank -- filled the void. And, in its 100+year
history, The Rawlins National Bank has been at the forefront of
this community and county. It elected the first woman to a bank
as a bank Director and had one of the nation's youngest bank
presidents.
Today it has grown to an institution with 4 locations
throughout Carbon County. And it looks forward to the next 100
years. "Our board of directors are proud to have provided more than
100 years of banking in Rawlins as an independent bank,"
President Richard Chenoweth said. "Our goal has not changed.
The Rawlins National Bank's mission is to provide Carbon County
with quality financial products and services designed to make
banking as convenient and friendly as possible."
